Message to the Association 2011

Fully qualified tradesman and construction site manager working on a 714 certificate for ten years; entered academia in 1992. Awarded a first class honours degree in building management in 1996 and Ph.D in plant management 1998. Over 15 years experience working as an academic at six higher education institutions in the UK, Hong Kong, Ghana and Australia and has published extensively in world class journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Automation in Construction and ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management. Currently holds visiting professorships at KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana and Curtin University, Western Australia and is currently the Faculty Director for Research and Director of the Centre of Business Innovation and Enterprise (CBIE) at Birmingham City Business School, Birmingham City University. Founder of the Off-highway Plant and Equipment Research Centre (OPERC), the Hand-arm Vibration Test Centre (HAVTEC) and Safetynet – amongst other accolades he was recently award the Department of Defense Ergonomics Working Group Commander’s medal (United States Department of Defense) for his research work into hand-arm vibration. Consultant on plant and equipment issues with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the UK Ministry of Defence, UK Home Office and has extensive linkages with research institutes (including École Polytechnique de Montréal (Canada); Petroleum GeoServices (Japan); Ministry of Agriculture (Italy); AktiMed Norge AS (Norway); Department of Labor (USA)) and industrial practitioners globally including manufacturers, civil engineering contractors and quarrying companies. He has previously attracted several EPSRC grants which were completed successfully and regularly undertakes research contracts for a diverse range of industry practitioners. Referee for numerous journals, has acted as external examiner at various institutions and is currently editorial board member for several other journals.
