Drivercpc
The Drivercpc (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) is an EU requirement and it will embrace all lorry drivers from 10th.September 2009. Briefly, if a lorry driver holds a lorry driving licence on that date he will not be required to hold a Drivercpc for 5 years, but in order to retain his licence after 10th.September 2014 he will have to prove attending 35 hours training during those 5 years. Anyone seeking a new lorry driving licence after 10th.September 2009 will have to complete a 2 part test, involving both theory and practical work, lasting 6 hours. If you need to know more, contact Driving Standards Agency on 0115 901 5938 and ask for the booklet Drivercpc.
The Tractor Run to Lands End
Staffs. & Midlands Branch member, Mike Clancy, will be one of the four tractor drivers who will leave John O'Groats on Sunday 27th. April, to make their way down the length of Scotland and England in aid of the Prostate Cancer Charity Fund. The four tractors they will be driving are a Case, a Ford Dexter, an International and Mike on his 41 year old David Brown. They estimate it will take them about 12 days and they are meeting all their own costs so that ALL donations will go to the Fund. If you want to contribute call Emma Cornwall on 0208.2227630. The route they will follow is given below, timing is approximately 100 miles a day but that will depend a great deal on the weather since there are no cabs on these tractors. To find out where they are and how they are doing call Patrick McGeever on 07870.593983. It is hoped they will spend a day at Scot Plant, so look for them there.
The proposed route from John O'Groats to Lands End wil be on the A99 to Wick, at Latherton take the A9 to Perth, then the A912 to the A91, left onto the A922 to Kinross. From Kinross on the B996, turn right onto the B917, then B981 to Inverkeithing, onto the A90 to Edinburgh and then the A7 to Carlisle. From Carlisle on A6 to the Lake District, Bolton and Manchester. From Manchester they will go down the A34 through Stratford-on-Avon, Cannock and Birmingham. Finally on the A38 all the way to Bristol, Exeter and Lands End. Do try and help them in some way on this exhausting run for a worthwhile charity.
Quick Hitches
A most valuable publication written by Dr. David Edwards - a member of Staffs. & Midlands Branch CMPE - and published by OPERC is entitled Guidance on the safe use of quick hitches.
It reviews three versions of the quick hitches, Manual, Semi Automatic and Fully Automatic that are in use today, together with their safe opereration. It would appear falling buckets from quick hitches are an increasing hazard and have caused 9 fatalities in recent times. Operator training and diligence in making sure all safety locks are in place is essential and responsibility doesn't stop with the operator. Are you sure you would be cleared in an Health & Safety Executive investigation?
Each Branch will be supplied with a copy and extra copies can be obtained by email from The President.
